Sovereignty is again in the Horse of the Year race after a powerful 4 ¾-length victory over Nitrogen in the $1 million Whitney Stakes (G1) for 3-year-olds and up Saturday at Saratoga.

The Whitney marked Sovereignty’s first victory against older horses and first since a 10-length triumph in the G1-Travers Stakes in August 2025 at Saratoga. Despite not running again in 2025 – he missed the G1-Breeders’ Cup Classic with a minor illness – Sovereignty was crowned Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male.

Sovereignty opened 2026 with a runner-up finish in the $1.25 million G2-Oaklawn Handicap and a third behind division leader and Oaklawn stakes winner Magnitude in the $2 million G1-Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) June 27 at Churchill Downs.

The rematch with Magnitude, the 9-5 favorite, turned into a mismatch as Sovereignty ($6.52) stormed to the front on the outside approaching the eighth pole and drew away late from Oaklawn stakes winner Nitrogen, a game front-runner who was facing males for the first time since her Aug. 30, 2024, career debut at Woodbine.

Sovereignty, last entering the second turn, covered 1 1/8 miles over a fast track in 1:47.91. He carried equal top weight of 126 pounds, including regular rider Junior Alvarado.

Nitrogen, the country’s champion 3-year-old filly of 2025, held second after setting demanding fractions of :46.27 for a half-mile and 1:09.65 for six furlongs. Nitrogen raced three times last season at Oaklawn, highlighted by a victory in the $250,000 G3-Bayakoa Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 7.

Sovereignty raised his career earnings to $6,876,550 following his seventh victory from 12 starts. Hall of Famer Bill Mott trains Sovereignty for breeder/owner Godolphin. Mott was Oaklawn’s leading trainer in 1986.

The Whitney was a “Win and You’re In” for the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

Oaklawn stakes winner Explora rolled in the seven-furlong $500,000 G1-Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Saratoga.

Explora, the 9-5 favorite under Flavien Prat, came from just off the pace for a five-length victory over Percy’s Bar, with Oaklawn stakes winner Goodall another 1 ¾ lengths farther back in third.

Explora ($5.74) was a leading Kentucky Oaks candidate after winning the 8 ½-furlong $750,000 G3-Honeybee Stakes March 1 at Oaklawn for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. After missing Oaklawn’s $1 million G2-Fantasy Stakes March 27 with a minor illness, Explora finished fourth in the 1 1/8-mile G1-Kentucky Oaks. She has flourished since cutting back to one turn. Explora was exiting a front-running 1 ¼-length victory in the seven-furlong Leslie’s Lady Stakes June 7 at Churchill Downs.

Explora has a 6-3-0 record from 10 lifetime starts and earnings of $1,534,415. She is a five-time stakes winner. Explora was one of three finalists for an Eclipse Award as North America’s champion 2-year-old filly.

Goodall won the six-furlong $150,000 Purple Martin Stakes March 14 at Oaklawn for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.

Oaklawn-raced Carolyncaroline finished second in the $100,000 Shenandoah Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs on the turf Saturday at Colonial Downs. … Oaklawn debut winner This Is Uscar and millionaire multiple Oaklawn stakes winner Coal Battle finished second and third, respectively, in the one-mile $200,000 R.A. “Cowboy” Jones Stakes for 3-year-olds and up Sunday at Ellis Park. … Oaklawn-raced Neoequos finished third in the $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes for 3-year-olds and up Sunday at Mountaineer.
