FOIE GRAS - Oaklawn Anywhere Overnight Stakes - 1st Running
$135,000 Oaklawn Anywhere Overnight Stakes
Paradise Farm’s and P Shooter Stable’s Foie Gras pulled off a 12-1 upset Sunday to win the inaugural running of the $135,000 Oaklawn Anywhere Overnight Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies that had yet to win an open stakes race.
Trained by Michael Maker and ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Foie Gras ($26.20) raced in a stalking position early as pacesetters Anakarina and Keyana ripped through an opening quarter-mile of :21.28. Foie Gras was in perfect stalking position in fourth at that point, before moving forward entering the turn. The daughter of popular sire Volatile was second after the half-mile was completed in :44.86 and assumed command in the upper stretch to win by 2 ¾ lengths, completing the race in 1:10.47.
Coaster, another longshot at 36-1 finished, second and returned a healthy place price of $28 and keyed a $1 exacta payoff of $266.60. Anakarina was third, followed by Baytown Butterfly, Decadent, Modo, Going Steady and Keyana. Modo was the 4-5 wagering favorite but was never able to reach contention.
Winning for the third time in 11 career starts, Foie Gras collected $72,900 for the victory to improve her lifetime earnings to $314,451.
Oaklawn racing resumes Thursday, Jan. 1, with a 10-race card including the initial running of the $135,000 Oaklawn Sports Overnight Stakes. First race post time is 12:30 p.m. CST.
